Supporting Self-Regulation: Beyond Traditional Behavior Management
"Why is my child or student constantly fidgeting?"
Parents and educators often feel exhausted by the constant need to remind children to sit still or focus. When we view this purely as a behavior to be managed, we miss the underlying message. Most often, the child is experiencing a regulatory mismatch between their nervous system’s need for movement and the expectations of their environment.
The Shift from Compliance to Connection
Instead of relying on restrictive seating or behavioral rewards, we can look at auditory and sensory load. When a child's vestibular and proprioceptive systems are supported through intentional movement, self-regulation happens naturally, rather than through force.
I have developed a specific framework to help you identify these sensory needs and provide the correct "movement nutrition" to help children regulate their systems throughout the day.
